Storytelling for teachers
The Government initiative “Talk for Writing” has highlighted the
advantages to be gained by both using oral storytelling in the class room and by
encouraging children to become storytellers themselves. Storytelling can be used
across the curriculum, however in relation to SEAL, storytelling is particularly
useful to help children understand motivation, and self awareness whilst encouraging empathy.
Children can be helped to develop their ideas and their expression in a non-threatening environment.
Beyond SEAL, storytelling can also help with inclusion where stories can be used to engage and
motivate and with the Gifted and Talented curriculum where children’s abilities can be
stretched whilst also encouraging some risk taking.
With ten years of storytelling experience working with both students and teachers at Foundation
Stage and Key Stages one and Two, I would be delighted to run a teacher’s workshop for your
school. For costs and availability – please contact me by telephone or
email.
